NEURODIVERSITY LIBRARY

Fidgets for All

Note: Due to concerns regarding COVID-19, the Neurodiversity Library is unavailable until further notice.

In the fall of 2017, the Vancouver chapter created a stim toy library with a generous donation from Stimtastic. It was later expanded to include books and other printed materials, resulting in the Neurodiversity Library.

The next year, SFU Autistics United established an additional stim toy and fidgets library, with the support of the Simon Fraser Student Society (SFSS) Women’s Centre and Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG). This was incorporated into the existing Rotunda Library at Simon Fraser University.

The goal of the Neurodiversity Library project is to provide a means of self-care for the public; to make stim toys accessible for everyone; and to create inclusive environments for neurodivergent people by normalizing fidget and stim toy use.

We are sparking change to respect the stim!

What is stimming?
  • Stimming is “self-stimulation,” usually with repetitive body movements or actions.
  • Stimming is common, and can range from tapping your pencil to twirling your hair to jiggling your leg to pacing.
  • Neurodivergent folks, such as autistic people, people with ADHD, or people with sensory processing disorder, may stim more often or in different ways.

Stim toys (or fidgets) are self-regulation tools to help with focus, attention, grounding, and calming. Examples include fidget spinners, Tangles, stress balls, Slinkies, and fidget cubes.

Stimming helps us:
  • Manage sensory and emotional input
  • Manage internal emotions like excitement and stress
  • Navigate our surroundings and ground ourselves

Fidgets, books, and more!
